Sometimes individual therapy is best suited to address a variety of specific concerns regarding long-standing sexual dysfunction, or conflicts about sexual orientation, gender identity, or an unusual sexual interest. Or you may simply wish to address recurring problematic patterns in relationships, a decision to stay in or end a relationship, or are adjusting to a life-changing experience, such as loss of relationship, infidelity, or cancer diagnosis. If you are not sure whether individual or couples format is best, I will help you determine this in a free telephone consultation prior to scheduling. Currently I am not participating with any insurance, however many of my clients are able to receive reimbursement for out of network benefits or from healthcare savings accounts. Our office will provide you with necessary documentation so you may file claims, and we will check your coverage for you when you contact us for a telephone intake.
All potential couples therapy clients are offered a free telephone consult in which I will answer questions and help you decide whether it makes sense to proceed with an initial evaluation with both partners vs. an individual session. If couples therapy seems appropriate, I will schedule an initial couples session followed by individual sessions for each partner before proceeding with couples therapy. This allows me to carefully complete an initial assessment that will best determine the focus and direction of therapy and to build an alliance with both partners. Occasionally I will suggest alternative treatment including individual therapy or referrals to outside resources. I schedule 1.5 hour sessions for all joint couples sessions vs. the standard insurance model of therapy of 1 hour sessions, which lends itself well to couples therapy. I perform psychological testing in the context of psychotherapy when it is necessary to help clarify diagnosis, as well as in the context of screening for co-occurring mental health conditions for TG/Non-binary individuals seeking referrals for medical transition. Please contact office for more information.
I will also hold in person intensive couples therapy sessions as needed. Couples Intensives are extended sessions held over a one or two day period and are sometimes useful to assess and provide direction for couples who may be stuck in their progress with conventional methods. Please contact me for a free telephone consultation for more information.
I am available for invited presentations to professional and lay audiences. Examples of past presentations are: Adult gender identity evaluation and treatment for psychotherapists, lectures for medical students & healthcare professionals on sexuality after breast and prostate cancer, community presentations for cancer survivors on emotional distress and sexual side effects of treatment.
